Element14 launches Pi IoT challenge, Mouser announces newest Empowering Innovation Together series.

Distributors of electronic components continued to add to their service and resource offerings as spring got into full swing, with a slate of new announcements in late April. Highlights include new offerings from element14 and Mouser.

Element14’s announcements included its new Pi IoT Smarter Spaces Design Challenge featuring the Bluetooth and wireless-enabled Raspberry Pi 3 microcomputer. The competition asks members of the element14 community to invent IoT-powered solutions that “allow users to control the multiple internet-enabled devices in any environment—be it their home, workspace, media room, backyard, and more,” according to the company.

“.... What we’re asking our members to create is a command center that presents a new way of interacting with and controlling multiple devices in any type of personal or business space,” says Dianne Kibbey, global head of content and community, element14. “We are looking forward to seeing the innovation and know-how of the Challengers and what types of unique spaces and devices they combine.”

The distributor will accept applications through Friday, May 13. Fifteen official “Challengers” will be announced on May 23 and will have 14 weeks to create their projects before the August 29 submission deadline.

Element14 also announced the launch of two new upgraded cameras that enhance the application of the Raspberry Pi computer: the Raspberry Pi Camera v2 and the Raspberry Pi NoIR Camera v2. Both have been upgraded to 8MP and feature an image sensor that allows the board to capture 3280 x 2464 pixel static images, among other capabilities, the company said.

Mouser launches Innovation Lab with newest “Empowering” series.

Mouser Electronics announced the launch of its newest Empowering Innovation Together series with Marvel and celebrity engineer Grant Imahara. The project introduces the Mouser Innovation Lab and “brings Super Hero technology to life,” the company said.

Imahara and special guests will build cutting-edge projects in the Mouser Innovation Lab. In the first project, the distributor will team up with Marvel to build Super Hero technology related to Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War, including real-life working versions of Captain America’s shield and Iron Man’s gauntlet. Imahara will team up with viral video celebrity Allen Pan in a series of videos to highlight the full build process. This first project is sponsored by Molex and Analog Devices, who will supply new, advanced parts for the build.
